Uganda Game Parks

Uganda boasts of a thrilling array of wildlife in its national parks, ranging from the rare and endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Parks, chimpanzees in the tropical rain forests to lions and elephants in Queen Elizabeth, Kidepo and Murchison Falls. In terms of birds, Uganda is among the top world destinations having a high number of birds. The birdlist of Uganda is characterized with over 1000-plus bird species and in Africa’s it is the most rewarding safari destination to birders.

With the first national park being gazzetted in 1952, Uganda boasts of a network of 10 national parks. These together with several other protected areas are under the management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Uganda’s game parks consist of various vegetation zones which range from tropical rain Forests, savanna grasslands and woodlands and Montane vegetation offering wildlife enthusiasts a thrilling opportunity to experience a wide range of fauna habituated in these habitats on a game viewing safari.

Over the past 20 years, Uganda’s national parks have seen a remarkable increase in the number of wild game. Tourists visiting Uganda’s national parks have also increased most especially to Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Kibale and Lake Mburo national parks. From the Forest national parks of Bwindi and Mgahinga wildlife enthusiasts have the chance to track different primates which include the rare Mountain gorillas. From Kibale National Park and other tropical rainforest, chimpanzee tracking can be carried out yet from the three montane national parks (that are important in protecting montane and bamboo forests) mountain trekking can be carried out. The savanna parks of Uganda that are teeming with wild animals such as antelopes, buffaloes and elephants provide best avenues for game viewing.
