7 Days Hike Mt Kilimanjaro – Umbwe Route

The Umbwe route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach.

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1: Umbwe Gate (1800m) – Bivouac (first) camp (2940m) 5 hours hike
After breakfast you will be driven to the Umbwe Gate at 1800m, passing through villages with coffee and banana plantations. On arrival at the Parks Gate have a briefing and later hike to Bivouac camp for dinner and overnight stay

DAY 2: Bivouac (first) camp (2940m) – Barranco camp (3950m) 6 hours hike
Breakfast then hike to Barranco camp. You will have dinner and overnight stay here.

DAY 3: Barranco camp (3950m) – Lava Tower (4630m) -Arrow Glacier Camp (4800m)
You will have breakfast and then start your hike towards Lava Tower, a famous landmark on Kilimanjaro. From Lava Tower you turn towards the Western Breach, a steep climb to Arrow Glacier camp (4800m). You will have dinner and overnight at Arrow Glacier Camp

DAY 4: Arrow Glacier (4800m) – Crater (5700m) 5 hours hike
From the Arrow Glacier camp you hike to the Crater camp, situated at the crater rim. You will have dinner and overnight here.

Day 6: SUMMIT: Barafu camp (4550m)-Uhuru Peak (5895m)-Mweka (3100m) 8 Hours hike
After breakfast you will hike to the summit. You will have a stopover at Stella Point (5685m) (6 hours hike) where you will have lunch. From Stella Point you will hike for 2-hour to Uhuru Peak. Spend time at the peak, later descend to
Mweka hut (3100m). You will have dinner and overnight here

Day 7: Mweka camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m) 3 hours hike
Breakfast, descend to Mweka gate. Proceed to Moshi or Arusha for dinner and overnight stay.
