Big Five Safaris in East Africa

What are Big Five Safaris

It is believed that the phrase Big Five game was coined by big-game hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals especially in Africa. The collection of the big five animals  consists of the lion, the African elephant, the Cape Buffalo, the leopard and the rhinoceros, either the black rhinoceros or the white rhinoceros. The members of the big five were chosen for the difficulty in hunting them and not their size.

Kenya and Tanzania are the best countries to enjoy game viewing ogf the big five. This is due to that both countries are home to the "Big Five" mammals - is also the only place on earth where you can enjoy a Big Five safari.

Many of the national parks and reserves have all the big five - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo - but it's not that easy to see them all on your first safari, particularly leopard. Leopards are nocturnal, secretive and well camouflaged, but there are some reserves where they are easily spotted. However, just being in the bush, seeing tiny animals like ants and frogs and learning the relationship between them, can be even more exciting than a procession of lions and elephants. So, even if you miss out on one or two of the big guys, you'll still have a great time.

In Uganda, rhinos miss on the list of the big five but the Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary offer another option to those interested in rhinos.
