8 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking Safari - Machame Route

Day 1: to Machame campsite

After breakfast our safari driver will pick you up from your hotel. You will then have a 2 hour drive to Machame gate. After a briefing and registration you will begin the hike. It will take you about 7 hours to reach Machame Campsite at a height of 3100m.Dinner and overnight at Machame campsite.

Day 2:  to Shira campsite

Have breakfast after which the hike will continue first across a valley with a beautiful stream then climb up a steep ridge. The trail drops down into a gorge after which you will begin ascending gently onto the moorland of the Shira plateau – considered as one of the most fascinating mountain areas. Climbing time will be around 7 hours after which you will reach Shira campsite. After this long and tiring climb, retire for dinner and overnight at Shira campsite. (Height 3850m)

Day 3: acclimatization day

Today after breakfast there are 2 possible short excursions. One leads to the Shira cathedral and another to the Shira cone. Have lunch and a free afternoon for relaxation. Dinner and overnight at Shira campsite.

Day 4: to lava tower

Have breakfast and climb for around 7 hours to the lava tower at 4600m. You will then descend to Barranco camp at 3950m. From the camp you will have fantastic views of the Barranco wall.  Dinner and overnight at Barranco camp.

Day 5: to Barafu camp

Enjoy a hearty breakfast then have a 1.5 hours climb up Barranco wall. Hike through the Karanga valley for the rest of the day. (Height 4600m) Dinner and overnight at Barafu camp.

Day 6: to Uhuru peak

Start the final ascent at about midnight in order to reach the summit for sunrise.  A steady climb for around 6 hours to Stella point; on the rim of Kibo, crater welcomed by a magnificent view of sunrise. Climb for 1.5 hours along the southern rim of the crater to reach Uhuru peak the highest point in Africa (5896m). Have 7-8 hours decent to reach Mweka camp at 3100m. Celebrate this victory with dinner and well deserved sleep at Mweka camp.

Day 7: to Mweka gate

After breakfast, hike to Mweka gate for around 3 hours. A certificate award awaits you at the end of this great trek. You will be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi ending your mountaineering safari.
