8 Days Rwanda Culture, Wildlife Safari

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1: arrival in Kigali
Our Cycads safari agent will meet you in person on your arrival at Kigali International airport. You will be transferred to Parc National des Volcans. Dinner and overnight Gorilla Nest camp (L) or Kinigi Guest house (B).

Day 2: gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans
After breakfast, proceed to the park headquarters for briefing prior to tracking the mountain gorillas. It is advisable to pack plenty of water and have a picnic lunch organized prior to the tracking. This is because tracking time can last from half an hour to over 6hours. Rain gear and strong hiking boots are also a necessity because weather often changes on short notice. An onsite guide will then lead you gorilla sanctuary of Volcanoes National Park to look for these shy but habituated primates. On this tracking expedition view and tour the tropical rain forest covering the hills surrounding Virunga Volcanoes and the immense biodiversity. Though challenging, gorilla tracking is a rewarding experience since the successful trackers are awarded a certificate after the expedition. The time spent in the forest depends on the movements of the primates in their natural environment. After the activity you return at leisure to Gorilla Nest Camp (L) or Kinigi Guest House (B) in Ruhengeri for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: to Lake Kivu in Gisenyi

Have a hearty breakfast after which you will proceed to Gisenyi a pretty town located on the main water body of Rwanda, Lake Kivu. Relax and enjoy beach activities on Lake Kivu. Check into Serena Kivu Hotel (L) or Palm Beach Hotel (M) or Stipp Hotel (B).

Day 4: to Nyungwe forest national park

Enjoy your breakfast then get on a boat in Gisenyi to Nyungwe forest national park with a lunch stop over in Kibuye. Enjoy the navigation on Lake Kivu. Arrive in Nyungwe in time for dinner and overnight at ORTPN Gisakura guest house.

Day 5: Primates’ walk in Nyungwe forest

You will have breakfast then proceed to the park headquarters for briefing. It is advisable to carry plenty of water and have a picnic lunch prepared prior to the trekking. Nyungwe forest is home to 13 species of primates, over 275 species of birds, 100 varieties of orchids. You may be rewarded with sights of wild chimpanzees, the Angolan colobus monkey and forest birds like the Rwenzori Turaco, black and white casqued hornbill. Dinner and overnight at ORTPN Gisakura guest house.

Day 6: experience Rwandan culture
Have breakfast then drive to Rwandan capital city, Kigali. You will have a stopover in Gikongoro to tour of the Murambi Genocide Memorial. Lunch. In Butare, you will find original Rwandan handicraft, exclusive to this particular part of Rwanda worldwide. Visit the biggest university and the national cultural museum in Butare. Stop over in Nyanza for a tour of the royal palace of ‘the Mwami’-the traditional king of Rwanda. Arrival in Kigali for dinner and overnight at Kigali Serena Hotel or Hotel Gorillas.
Day 7: boat trip in Akagera national park

After breakfast, drive to Akagera National Park located nears the Tanzanian-Rwanda border.  After lunch have an afternoon boat trip on the Lake Ihema where you may see the large pods of hippo, out sized Nile crocodile and dense concentrations of water birds like the shoebill stork, African fish eagle and papyrus Gonolek. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge or ORPTN Camping Site with view on the Lake Ihema. FB
Day 8: game drive and departure
Rise early to have a game drive in Akagera national park. You may have the opportunity to catch the early risers like Burchell's Zebra, lions, elephants, topi, giraffes and impalas. Exit the park and drive back to Kigali having lunch enroute. You will be transferred to Kigali airport to catch your flight back home.
