10 DAYS KENYA CLASSIC BIRD WATCHING SAFARI

Day 1: to Mt. Kenya

Our cycads safari driver will pick you up from your Nairobi hotel and drive you towards Mt. Kenya. Have an afternoon stopover at Wajee camp in Mukurweini valley. Enjoy a few hours of birding where you can view the endemic hind’s babbler. After lunch proceed to the base of Mount Kenya where you will dine and lodge tonight.

Day 2: Naru Moru river lodge

Have breakfast after which you will drive to Naro Moru river lodge arriving in time for lunch. Watch game at the water hole. Take a walk around the lodge grounds and in the small forest looking out for bird species like: Hartlaub’s Turaco, cinnamon-Chested bee-eater, crowned and silvery-cheeked hornbills, cape wagtail, black saw-wing, yellow-whiskered, slender-billed and mountain Greenbulls, white-starred robin, cape and Ruppell’s robin chats, African dusky flycatcher, cinnamon bracken warbler, hunter's Cisticola, chestnut-throated, grey and black-throated Apalis, grey-capped warbler, white-browed Crombec, montane white-eye, white-bellied tit, tropical Boubou, grey cuckoo-shrike, montane oriole, white-headed wood hoopoe, eastern and northern double-collared sunbird (among other six species), brown-capped weavers, thick-billed seed-eater and yellow-crowned canary. Overnight at the Naro Moru river lodge.

Day 3: to lake Baringo

Have an early morning bird walk on the lodge grounds and midmorning breakfast. Proceed to Lake Baringo across the Solio plains. If you are lucky you will spot white and black rhinos through the fence of Solio ranch. Stop over at the Thompson falls lodge for lunch after which you will continue to Lake Baringo club grounds our lodging for the next 2 nights. Look out for the lake’s specialities like Jackson's and Hemprich's Hornbill, Bristle-Crowned Starlings, Brown-Tailed Rock Chat, Dark-Chanting Goshawk, a variety of weavers as well as an incredible number of water birds.

Day 4: boat ride on Lake Baringo

Walk to the Baringo basalt cliffs for an early bird watching spree. Enjoy breakfast and later an optional boat ride around the lake. After lunch, leave for Lake Bogoria game reserve where you will have a game/bird drive. Watch out for notable species like huge flocks of cape teals, fulvous whistling ducks, black-necked grebes and other wader birds not mentioning the lesser and greater flamingoes. We will later drive back to Lake Baringo club, late evening for dinner and overnight.

 

 

Day 5: to Kakamega forest

After breakfast leave for Kakamega forest through the Kericho valley with a couple of birding stop overs. Look out for the Gambaga Flycatcher. Arrive in time for lunch at the Rondo retreat centre. After lunch go birding at the retreat’s lovely grounds.  Dinner and overnight at Rondo retreat centre.

Day 6: Kakamega forest

Pre- breakfast birding to catch the early forest risers. Enjoy a late breakfast followed by another bird watching spree then lunch. Look out for the 36 bird species endemic to this forest like the blue-headed bee-eater, western black-headed oriole, Jameson’s wattle-eye, turner's Eremomela, African crowned eagles, Yellowbill, great blue and black-bellied Turaco and Greenbulls among others. Dinner and overnight at Rondo retreat centre.

 

Day 7: to Kisumu

Have breakfast then leave for Kisumu via some major birding hot spots with lunch enroute. Visit Dunga swamp habitat to rare Lake Victoria swamp species. Dinner and overnight at Kisumu Sunset hotel.

Day 8: to lake Nakuru
 
After breakfast, drive to Lake Nakuru national park – a birding paradise having a lunch stop over enroute.  Enter Lake Nakuru national park for a late afternoon game drive to view the greater and lesser flamingos. Dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru lodge.

Day 9: to lake Naivasha

 Rise early for another game drive in the park then have breakfast and leave for Lake Naivasha. Have lunch at Lake Naivasha country club. Go evening bird watching on the lake shores.  Dinner and overnight at Lake Naivasha Country Club.

 

Day 10: to Nairobi

You can either spend a morning of bird watching in Naivasha or visit Crescent Island located across the lake from Lake Naivasha country club. Have lunch and drive towards Nairobi via Kinangop grasslands in search of Sharpe’s long claw. Stop over to view African and migratory ducks at some ponds enroute. If your flight is late evening arrive in Nairobi and transfer to the airport to catch your flight home.
